PFAS, a group of more than 3,000 human-made chemicals with adverse health impacts, have been detected in water supplies across the U.S. With its widespread impact to drinking water and the near certainty that select PFAS will be classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as hazardous waste, an understanding its properties and viable treatment options are needed. This presentation provides an overview of the fate and transport properties of different PFAS as well as design elements for an in situ permeable sorptive barrier treatment system in shallow groundwater at a metal finishing facility, where a PFAS-based mist suppressant to mitigate hexavalent chromium vapors had impacted groundwater.
