The Navy’s crisis response to the Red Hill fuel spill on Oahu was unprecedented in its scope, complexity, and cost. The crisis impacted thousands of military families and imposed a massive toll on the hundreds of military, civilian, and contractor personnel that participated in the response. As a senior leader on a joint and multi-agency task force facing a myriad of complex regulatory, technical, logistical, and political issues was incomprehensibly challenging and the hardest thing I have done in my 27-year military career.
