Beneficial Electrification of Buildings can enhance the military’s ability to meet the primary missions’ requirements, with the added benefit of reducing greenhouse gases and moving towards buildings that run completely on renewable energy. The “short” definition of Beneficial Electrification is: “The use of electricity for end-uses that would otherwise be powered by fossil fuels where doing so reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and saves consumers money.” The Federal Government is enacting new regulations to ensure new buildings are more sustainable and commercial energy codes are taking steps towards building electrification in each successive edition. This webinar presents a panel discussion which includes the core design disciplines involved in designing for beneficial electrification of Federal buildings and will discuss the impact on project budgets, project schedules, and LCCA, focusing on the over-arching theme that these project parameters won’t be burdened by the new building electrification requirements. Additional points of discussion of the electrification movement will focus on risks and barriers including regulatory, market, and equity concerns, as well as approaches to overcome them. Key risks to be discussed include supply chain upheavals, air quality improvements, utility grid limitations, mission resiliency, and geo-political concerns.
