To date, available laboratory analytical approaches include what are known as “target” and “non-target” analyses. While targeted analyses are limited to a fixed set of parameters, non-target analyses provide an insight into the total amount of potential PFAS present. Each of these analytical approaches offers distinct advantages for environmental practitioners. At the same time, the limitations of each need to be considered when assessing their utility in different situations. This presentation will provide a high-level introduction of the two analytical approaches and what is meant by target and non-target analyses, show how results can differ between the methods, and highlight advantages and limitations of each method. We will provide real-world examples of challenges faced by environmental practitioners dealing with PFAS impacts in the environment and describe specific situations where it is advantageous to use one technique over the other, or as complimentary methods.
