Environmental Sequence Stratigraphy (ESS) utilizes nearly 75 years of academic and industry science to develop more effective ways to characterize the distribution of geologic materials in the subsurface and thus better understand contaminant migration and constrain flux-based conceptual site models.
With historic roots in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and basin analysis, ESS utilizes considerable experience by the oil and gas industry to use sequence stratigraphy to better understand and predict reservoir conditions, enabling more effective reservoir development. As successful as that application has been for oil and gas development, utilizing similar approaches in contaminated site characterization is proving trickier, as the nature of contaminated aquifers is sufficiently different from most oil and gas reservoirs that direct technology transfer is proving difficult. In addition, historical efforts to collect subsurface data at contaminated sites have generally not included key observations important to ESS. These challenges can be overcome in a cost-effective manner allowing ESS relevant data collection and interpretation to be included in all phases of site characterization and remediation. of the principles of ESS, explain how it differs from traditional approaches, discuss limitations to its application, and offer opportunities to expand its use in the future.
